How Can We Help?

Working with Activities

Activities are tasks/processes the user does. They contain and manage forms.

A form has to be in an activity in order to appear on a screen. A screen contains an activity, which contains a form, which contains fields. If you want to remember that, you can use the handy acronym SAFF. (If you’re in one of the controller states, screens are called states, activities are still activities, forms are known as groups, and fields are called elements. And the acronym becomes SAGE.)

For example, if your application is an address book, you might have a form (let’s call it Phone) where the user can enter the user’s work phone numbers. The form Work Phone might have fields for Work phone and Work cellphone.

So, you have two fields organized into a form. You would create an activity and add the form to it. You would then add the activity to the screen that you want those fields to appear on.

One thing to remember about activities is that they don’t span screens. You can’t put part of an activity on one screen and part of it on another.

Adding, Renaming and Deleting Activities

Activities are made from fields. In order to create an activity, you have to first create a field. If you don’t know how to create a field, see the Adding, Renaming, and Deleting Fields Help topic.

After you create an activity, you will want to add one or more forms to it. Then remember that you have to add the activity to a screen for it to show up in the application.

NOTE! For information on how to create an activity using Text-to-software, see Creating Activities Using Text-to-software.

Adding Forms to Activities

In order for a form (or group, if you are in one of the controller modes) to appear on a screen, it has to be part of an activity that appears on a screen.

Activities can contain multiple forms. You can put an instance of a single form in multiple activities, but you cannot put two instances of the same form on a single activity. Once you have added a form to an activity once, you can’t add it again to have the form in the activity twice.

TO ADD A FORM TO AN ACTIVITY
1. On the Requirements Analysis tab, click a form in the Forms box.
2. In the Activities box, right-click an activity and click Add Group To Activity.

Removing Forms from Activities

If you’ve added a form to an activity and then changed your mind about having it there, you can remove the form. The form will still exist, so you will be able to add it to some other activity if that’s what you want.

TO REMOVE A FORM FROM AN ACTIVITY
1. Click the Requirements Analysis tab.
2. In the Activities box, right-click an activity and click Remove Group From Activity.

Viewing the Forms in Your Activities

There are two ways to have a look at the forms in your activities.

2. In the Activities box, do one of the following:
• Double-click an activity to expand it.
